Publisher description: The coming of Christianity to the state of Kievan Rus', during the reign of Vladimir I at the end of the tenth century had an enormous impact on the development of Russian civilization. For a time, pagan and Christian beliefs and practices coexisted in a parallel system known as 'dual faith'. The roots of many Russian myths and customs are associated with the practices of these early Slav peoples, whose main deities and concepts are described. Beginning with the cult of the ancestors and related beliefs about death and the afterlife, the author draws on a rich variety of sources to illuminate the evolution of major themes and motifs and sets Russian myths in the context of mythology the world over.
