"As humans, we embrace a culture of rugged individualism, yet we chase the comfort and sense of purpose that comes from group belonging. How we adopt, navigate, cultivate, and sometimes eliminate our shared identities speaks to the social energy generated by contemporary events like COVID-19 and social movements--such as Black Lives Matter, NeverAgain, and #MeToo--that promote a sense of we-ness while raising public awareness about group identities. Especially timely given our polarized world, Chasing We-ness interrogates our efforts to achieve a state of we-ness in the twenty-first century. This interdisciplinary book explores why, how, and with what effect we build we-ness into our lives. Drawing on observations of pop culture, in-depth interviews, and personal experiences, William Marsiglio explores the motivational forces that inspire we-ness while highlighting overlapping areas of social life that enable us to experience a sense of group belonging.
