"The unique stone structures of Earl A. Young in the small town of Charlevoix, Michigan were constructed between 1919 and 1973. With only a year of formal architectural training, never receiving an architect's license, for six decades this fiercely independent builder always referred to himself as a realtor. As more and more of his one-of-a-kind works appeared, Earl Young's reputation began to spread. Over those prolific years, Charlevoix became identified with Earl Young, and he became identified with Charlevoix. What he accomplished has now become so well known that his name and the phrase 'The Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix' are recognized around the globe. This completely illustrated biography is the first ever attempt to capture this enigmatic, determined artist, the highs and lows of his eventful life, and his works in their entirety. Vintage photos, several taken by Earl himself, are here combined with the masterful modern photography of Mike Barton, many of whose exterior and interior images have never appeared in his own books on Earl Young.
