520 | _aProgram 5: PLUGGING IN - recounts how rock reinvented itself in the mid-60's. Watch footage of the Byrds and the Mamas and the Papas as they create a new sound. Beach Boy Brian Wilson recalls the pressure he felt to compete with the Beatles while The Who and Jimi Hendrix tear up the Monterey Pop Festival. Eric Burdon of the Animals recalls his first meeting with Janis Joplin and we witness the furious passion of Bob Dylan's performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Program 6: MY GENERATION - recounts the giddy rise -and harrowing fall of rock's late 60's counterculture. In rare footage, we see the pace setting impresarios and bands who brought to life the Bay Area's "summer of love" before going on to international fame. The Grateful Dead, Santana and Jefferson Airplane jam together and Janis Joplin appears with Big Brother and the Holding Company for an impassioned version of "Ball and Chain". Also included are classic performances from Woodstock, with songs from Santana, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, as well as the Rolling Stones. When the era ended it ended with a grizzly bang. | ||
