Program 7: GUITAR HEROES- Though amplified guitars had appeared earlier in the big bands of the 1940's, the modern instrument, developed by Les Paul and Leo Fender, only achieved its present-day prominence thanks to the triumph of rock n roll. This program examines the role of this instrument in the history of rock n roll, focusing on the famous pioneers such as Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin as well as some of the instrument's unsung heroes such as rockabilly virtuoso James Burton. The Who's Pete Townshend explains how he copped his trademark windmill move from Keith Richards. Also Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen, Slash of Guns N' Roses, and Jimi Hendrix all show how to unlock what Pete Townshend calls the physical poetry of the electric guitar. .Program 8: THE 70'S-HAVE A NICE DECADE recaptures the artistic highs and debauched lows of rock's glamour years. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant retell the origins of Led Zepplin, while a rare 1969 clip shows the early band in full-flight. Steely Dan appears in a live early"70's performance, while David Gilmour of Pink Floyd recounts the making of "Dark Side of the Moon". Also in this program are appearances by Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie alias Ziggy Stardust, Peter Frampton and Bruce Springsteen.
