In August 1914, the people of Europe were swept into the first of the wars that would make the twentieth century the bloodiest ever, as 70 million soldiers from more than twenty countries marched off to World War I. This program hears the stories of soldiers from all sides as they remember the nature and scale of the slaughter that shattered the old world order. Their memories include conscription, machine guns and mustard gas, aerial bombing, the trenches, the Battles of Verdun and Somme, conscientious objectors, military justice, armistice.
